Overview

Tenori stands out as a focused Japanese eatery specializing in onigiri, the traditional rice ball elegantly wrapped in nori and filled with a variety of flavorful ingredients. Nestled conveniently near a bustling campus in Irvine, California, this spot offers a quick yet satisfying taste of Japanese street food culture, appealing especially to students and busy professionals looking for a wholesome and speedy meal.

The menu is delightfully simple, centered on several onigiri options such as spicy tuna, pork belly, and kbbq beef, each crafted with care and topped with the signature bonito furikake that adds a subtle umami punch. The rice is remarkably well-prepared—fluffy, slightly sticky, and perfectly holding the fillings together—demonstrating the kitchen’s attention to quality in its seemingly minimalist offering. Sauces like unagi and sriracha are available to tailor the heat and savoriness to one’s preference, enhancing the experience without overpowering the core flavors.

Tenori’s atmosphere complements its menu: the casual space includes communal indoor seating and ample outdoor tables, making it ideal for a quick lunch, a snack between classes, or a low-key meet-up. The efficient service ensures that orders are served promptly, catering well to those on a tight schedule, though some may find the staff reserved rather than overtly welcoming.

Patrons often note the freshness and crunch of the seaweed wrapping—a key element that elevates the onigiri beyond a simple snack. While some fillings like the spicy salmon might lean towards a milder heat, others like the mentai assert a bolder spiciness for those seeking more intensity. Pork belly fillings deliver a savory balance with house sauces, though occasional dryness is reported, suggesting a focus on seasoning rather than richness.

For those new to onigiri or fans of Japanese street eats, Tenori offers a refined, approachable experience emphasizing fresh ingredients and authentic textures. Its location near a university campus makes it a natural stop for students craving a quick, flavorful bite that’s a step above fast food but still easy on the time. The brand’s philosophy of simplicity, quality, and customization through sauces speaks to an audience that values convenience without sacrificing taste.

Tenori has pretty solid origini some of the options could have used a bit more flavor and spice but overall a delicious meal.

Very simple menu, just onigiri with various fillings or spam masubi along with sauces and bottled beverages. Slightly pricey but reasonable for the taste.

I highly recommend trying this place. This was my first time, and I am very impressed! The owner greeted me and gave me suggestions, which all were amazing! I had the 3 items option - Spicy Salmon, Kbbq, and my favorite was the pork belly! They were full of flavor, and I added Sriracha for an extra kick! I'll definitely be back!

I've visited the Tenori at Rodeo 39 in the past, but I don't remember the onigiri tasting quite so fresh and delightful. On our first visit to the Irvine location we tried a trio of onigiris…I ordered the Pork Belly and Spicy Salmon for myself and the Mentai for my wife. I was impressed by how crunchy the seaweed was and the quality of the ingredients, but IMO the Spicy Salmon didn’t pack enough heat. I didn't personally try the Mentai, but my wife commented that it was legit spicy. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and there was consistent traffic inside the restaurant. Service was efficient, but I wouldn’t describe the staff as overly friendly. If we weren't in a rush, I would've tried the other three flavors too. There's always next time!

I got mentai, spicy salmon and pork belly which came out super fast! It's ideal for a quick lunch or snack spot when you're busy or too lazy to cook. It's perfectly located near campus. There are two long tables and plenty of outdoor seating! I love mentai but there was a bit too much and it was slightly salty for me :( I had to take one bite of mentai then switch to pork belly and spicy tuna to balance it out. The pork belly was kinda dry, but the seasoning/sauce paired really well with the rice. The rice is so well cooked, I love it! Never knew this simple onigiri had so much flavor! Great for someone who likes quick simple meals.

Their Choose Any 3 Onigiri for $11 is a decent deal. Otherwise, each one of their 8 flavors is $4. We got Pork Belly, KBBQ, & Spicy Salmon. You can order online first or use the touchscreens in-store. Since they’re made—to-order, it took about 10 min to prepare. The Spicy Salmon was moist and flavorful but just wished it actually had some spice. And I would rank Pork Belly slightly higher than KBBQ. Finally, the nori they use is not as thick as the typical kind. It’s more like the nori you get in the snack packs.
